In my short life span I have met some amazing, compassionate, driven and caring people, who have enriched my life but yet are unable to recognise the greatness that they have within them. This has made me sad and wonder WHY! In fact, we disguise our decisions based on being “realistic”, which in fact is really out of fear, fear of loss, of failure, rejection, and disappointment and so on. I guess you are wondering why I am concerned with this subject matter well in short my exposure and career within the health and fitness industry as a; receptionist, manager, gym goer to freelance instructor, sports scientist, personal trainer, rehab therapist to now a new graduate physiotherapist. Has allowed me to as I have said before to meet some truly amazing people, but the fear perplexed if not all of them from achieving the goals they set out to achieve, including myself. I always wondered as a client to a trainer and trainer to a client what was the disconnect, why my trainer or myself as a trainer at times unable to bridge that gap as to what’s really stopping that person from achieving what was set out to do. I mean it is that simple right, work out your marcos, weigh your food, eat all your food, exercise 3 to 4 times a week, sleep well and it will ALL fall into place right? Wrong, we are not machines we are human beings that our governed by our emotions and our learned experiences. The great philosophers of our time and even evidence as found that on the path to change resistance will be encountered but no one has ever been able to explain fully why, this resistance is encountered and why we give up and stop. Most will not understand why and will usually put it down to:
What if I told you a person comes to YOU for change, it’s never really about weight loss or gain! Something is so painful in their life that they eventually took that step to come to you to make the change and on surface level this could be about weight loss. What if I told you that the reason why as a trainer or physiotherapist, you could be at your wits end is because, you have not educated nor managed expectations of said client. What if I told you have not prepared them for this life changing experience that will make them uncomfortable (this is no ones fault) as a trainer have you ever stopped to ask this?
